Description

Named for a Reason

There’s a particular feeling you get arriving at Kiawah Island for the first time. Winding under a canopy of live oaks draped in Spanish moss, the Atlantic appearing through the maritime forest ahead of you, the whole pace of things slows down before you’ve even parked. Kiawah (pronounced Key-Oh-Wuh) sits just south of our Charleston workshop; a barrier island known for its pristine beaches, ancient live oaks, and accommodations to include The Sanctuary and storied Ocean Course.

It’s a place designed quietly but deliberately, for people who understand the value of unhurried time in a beautiful setting.

That’s the feeling The Kiawah swing bed is modeled around; confident without being loud, refined without being fussy, and built for the kind of unhurried afternoon that most people don’t give themselves enough of. Guests at The Sanctuary may sit on the Grand Lawn watching dolphins hunt the surf, but your version of that experience happens on your porch.

Modern Design, Open to the Elements

The Kiawah started as a question: what if we took the modern aesthetic our customers love about The Charlotte and made it breathe? The Charlotte’s solid paneled backrest creates a sense of enclosure and visual weight, but others wanted that same modernized language with a lighter, airier feel; something breezy that felt more connected to the outdoor space.

The answer is the three horizontal slats that define The Kiawah’s backrest, coupled with a wider overall profile than anything we offer.

Spaced evenly and running the full width of the frame, the backrest design maintains the clean geometric lines of a modern open-back swing bed while fundamentally changing how it interacts with its environment. The Kiawah’s armrests are noticeably wider than what you’ll find on our other models—wide enough to hold a coffee mug without balancing, wide enough to prop a book, wide enough to function as a true built-in side surface rather than a nominal arm. The effect is a hanging daybed swing that feels more open, more connected, and more intentional.

Three Sizes

Loveseat (64″L x 33.5″D x 28″H)Slightly larger than The Charlotte’s Loveseat thanks to the wider armrests. Fits our 52″x28″ Loveseat mattress.

Twin (85″L x 43″D x 28″H)The most popular Kiawah size. Fits a standard 39×75 mattress. Comfortable for 2–3 adults with generous 3.5-4″ armrests.

Full (85″L x 58″D x 25.5″H)Maximum lounging space. Fits a full size 54×75 mattress. A wider lounging, resort-level experience.

Not sure what fits your porch? Send us your measurements at relax@lcswingbeds.com — we’ll tell you exactly what works and if it needs any modifications to ensure a perfect fit.

Wood & Finish Options

Wood Species

  • KD Southern Pine — Our standard. FSC-certified, takes paint exceptionally well, machines cleanly for the crisp lines the Kiawah’s design requires.
  • Mahogany — Naturally dense and rot-resistant. Beautiful under a clear coat or light stain where grain is visible against the open backrest slats.
  • Teak — The benchmark for outdoor furniture longevity. Oils naturally, requires no finish treatment, and weathers to a distinguished silver-grey if left untreated.
  • Cedar — Naturally aromatic, lightweight, and weather-resistant.

Construction

Every Kiawah is built by hand in our Charleston, SC workshop. Primary stress points use mortise and tenon joinery and coated Timberlok hardware. Joints are glued, assembled, and finished before hardware is set.

What is a hanging daybed swing?

It’s a suspended swing bed sized and proportioned for horizontal lounging, much closer to a daybed or outdoor sofa than a traditional porch swing. The Kiawah hangs from four points via rope or chain from your porch ceiling, ceiling joists, or pergola beam.

How is The Kiawah different from The Charlotte?

Both are contemporary designs from the same Charleston workshop. The key differences: The Kiawah has a three-slat open backrest; The Charlotte’s back is a full solid panel. The Kiawah’s armrests are also meaningfully wider. The Charlotte reads as more enclosed and architectural while The Kiawah reads as more open and daybed-like. Both pieces are uncompromisingly refined design statements.

Does air actually flow through the three-slat back?

Noticeably so, even with cushions. The slat spacing is generous enough to allow a real cross-breeze, which is one reason the Kiawah is a popular choice for customers on the Gulf Coast and throughout the Southeast.

What hanging hardware works best?

Black powder-coated chain is the preferred choice for customers going for a more contemporary, finished look. We don’t recommend bare steel chain for coastal or humid climates due to rust potential over time.

Can I use a standard mattress or cushion?

It is not recommended for a variety of reasons, but can work in indoor settings. We offer custom-fit outdoor mattresses in and cushion sets designed specifically for the Kiawah, which is the recommended option for any porch with direct sun or weather exposure (though we may be bias).

What porch depth do I need?

This question always depends on the size of swing, but best practice is to retain a *minimum* clearance of 12 inches on all sides, though 18 is a safer bet if you can “swing” it (haha). Send us your measurements if you’re unsure as it’s one of the most common pre-purchase questions we get, and we’d rather help you confirm fit before you order.
