Description
Named for a Reason
There’s a particular feeling you get arriving at Kiawah Island for the first time. Winding under a canopy of live oaks draped in Spanish moss, the Atlantic appearing through the maritime forest ahead of you, the whole pace of things slows down before you’ve even parked. Kiawah (pronounced Key-Oh-Wuh) sits just south of our Charleston workshop; a barrier island known for its pristine beaches, ancient live oaks, and accommodations to include The Sanctuary and storied Ocean Course.
It’s a place designed quietly but deliberately, for people who understand the value of unhurried time in a beautiful setting.
That’s the feeling The Kiawah swing bed is modeled around; confident without being loud, refined without being fussy, and built for the kind of unhurried afternoon that most people don’t give themselves enough of. Guests at The Sanctuary may sit on the Grand Lawn watching dolphins hunt the surf, but your version of that experience happens on your porch.
Modern Design, Open to the Elements
The Kiawah started as a question: what if we took the modern aesthetic our customers love about The Charlotte and made it breathe? The Charlotte’s solid paneled backrest creates a sense of enclosure and visual weight, but others wanted that same modernized language with a lighter, airier feel; something breezy that felt more connected to the outdoor space.
The answer is the three horizontal slats that define The Kiawah’s backrest, coupled with a wider overall profile than anything we offer.
Spaced evenly and running the full width of the frame, the backrest design maintains the clean geometric lines of a modern open-back swing bed while fundamentally changing how it interacts with its environment. The Kiawah’s armrests are noticeably wider than what you’ll find on our other models—wide enough to hold a coffee mug without balancing, wide enough to prop a book, wide enough to function as a true built-in side surface rather than a nominal arm. The effect is a hanging daybed swing that feels more open, more connected, and more intentional.
Three Sizes
Loveseat (64″L x 33.5″D x 28″H) — Slightly larger than The Charlotte’s Loveseat thanks to the wider armrests. Fits our 52″x28″ Loveseat mattress.
Twin (85″L x 43″D x 28″H) — The most popular Kiawah size. Fits a standard 39×75 mattress. Comfortable for 2–3 adults with generous 3.5-4″ armrests.
Full (85″L x 58″D x 25.5″H) — Maximum lounging space. Fits a full size 54×75 mattress. A wider lounging, resort-level experience.

Wood & Finish Options
Wood Species
- KD Southern Pine — Our standard. FSC-certified, takes paint exceptionally well, machines cleanly for the crisp lines the Kiawah’s design requires.
- Mahogany — Naturally dense and rot-resistant. Beautiful under a clear coat or light stain where grain is visible against the open backrest slats.
- Teak — The benchmark for outdoor furniture longevity. Oils naturally, requires no finish treatment, and weathers to a distinguished silver-grey if left untreated.
- Cedar — Naturally aromatic, lightweight, and weather-resistant.
Construction
Every Kiawah is built by hand in our Charleston, SC workshop. Primary stress points use mortise and tenon joinery and coated Timberlok hardware. Joints are glued, assembled, and finished before hardware is set.
