Every swing bed starts with a tree. We believe that tree should come from a forest managed with care — and we’re willing to put our money where our values are.
That’s why all our lumber we use in our products is FSC-certified, so you’re getting quality, sustainabily-sourced materials with every purchase.
When we started Lowcountry Swing Beds in 2012, we sought partnerships with reputable companies that shared our vision, part of which meant sourcing FSC-certified lumber. Not because someone told us to, and not because it was a trend, but because we’re woodworkers. We know what good wood looks like, where it comes from, and what happens when forests aren’t managed responsibly.
It costs us more and it takes more effort to find the right suppliers. But it means we can trace the wood in every swing bed back to a forest that’s managed for the long haul, not for short-term profit. For a company that builds furniture meant to last for generations, that kind of long-term thinking felt like the only option.
The Forest Stewardship Council is an international nonprofit founded in 1993 to combat global deforestation. Rather than relying on government regulation alone, FSC created a certification system that uses market demand to reward responsible forest management. Today, it’s widely considered the gold standard.
FSC certification is built on 10 core principles. Certified forests must protect water quality, preserve biodiversity, prohibit old-growth harvesting, avoid hazardous chemicals, and respect the rights of indigenous peoples and local workers. These aren’t aspirational goals; they’re audited requirements, verified by independent third parties.
Every swing bed we offer is available in your choice of four wood species — each one sourced through FSC-certified supply chains.
Classic Southern character. Lightweight, takes paint and stain beautifully. Our most popular choice.
Naturally aromatic with built-in weather and insect resistance. Great for fully exposed outdoor spaces.
The gold standard for outdoor furniture. Extremely dense, naturally oily, and virtually impervious to the elements.
Responsibly managed forests tend to produce better lumber. Slower growth means tighter grain, which leads to more consistent stock. Choosing FSC isn’t a compromise. It’s a better product and a better story behind it.
Through the National Forest Foundation's Sapling Program, every swing bed purchase contributes to planting new trees on America's National Forests. It's the other half of how we think about our relationship with wood.
Handcrafted swing beds built with FSC-certified wood in our Charleston workshop. Shipped nationwide.
